THE ONE MISTAKE YOU SHOULDN’T MAKE FOR YOUR WEBSITE
Spending this past year really delving deep into the world of DIY website creation and design, I have fell victim to TONS of trial and error. Even after hours of research and cautious comparisons, I have still made mistakes and OF COURSE mistakes = content!
One of the BIGGEST mistakes that I made (that I still haven’t completely fixed) is currently on my other website that I own for my Hula Hoop Teaching website, Hoop Teach and Jam. I spent HOURS painstakingly working on my Multi-purpose Weston theme and thought it would be super fancy and unique to build my entire website off of Slider Revolution. Slider Revolution is a plugin available through WordPress which creates really unique sliders, carousels, and hero scenes to enhance your website. You can enhance every slider with animation, transitions, parallax, and all the fancy bells and whistles you can dream.
Slider Revolution is annoying, but ‘whew’ is it gorgeous! After weeks of a very stressful, detailed tinkering of every slider I used on every page of my website, I was SPENT. But I was done. I looked at my website from Desktop and was 90% happy about it. I was too burned out to even care about the 10% of mistakes that stood out to me because I felt my website was gorgeous enough. I dusted off my hands and chalked my website up as a gorgeous, super fancy, and completed design.
Everything was off line
Most things were either too small or too large to see
The sliders weren’t responding as they should
The transitions were clunky
So immediately I ran back to my editor and spent hours more worth of time making sure that everything worked on mobile, because I had made my priority to make my website pretty as opposed to functional. And don’t get me started on SEO….. it’s just simply non-existent if you build your website all on Slider Plugins.
MAKE SURE YOUR WEBSITE IS OPTIMIZED FOR MOBILE FIRST AS OPPOSED TO OPTIMIZING IT FOR DESKTOP.
The rise of people who access the Internet via a device such as their phone or tablet is insane. In fact, more people are using their devices as their main source of access to the Internet and rarely navigate website on their Desktop or Laptop computers. You HAVE to make sure that the mobile version of your website looks as great, and runs as smoothly as it does on desktop or you will lose TONS of traffic. I can’t tell you the number of times during this journey I have visited someone’s website on my phone and it is not optimized for a smooth visit. SEO is also big on making sure that you have a mobile-friendly website.
There are still tons of improvements I need to make to my other website; in fact I’ll probably have to re-make it all over again, especially if I want to have any type of SEO ranking. However, I’m still so burned out from working out it originally and am so focused on not making the same mistake on this website, that I literally haven’t touched it for months. It’s what I currently call my “digital calling card” website so I’m lucky in that fashion. My Hula Hoop business is purely local and intentionally very small, so ranking high on search engine results is really not my concern. The structure of my website works for now, because it is something that I use as my “business card”, as opposed to actually having business cards. When I’m networking with people, I tell them to visit www.hoopteachandjam.com to get in contact with me, and when they visit my super pretty (& unpractical) website, they have a way to get in contact with me and check out some photos. I ended up lucky for the intention that I wanted to use for my website. But for you, hero who wants to possibly have a monetized website that ranks high in search results, that is easy to navigate on mobile
